1. Core Commitment to Transparency
At VNews, we believe that trust requires complete transparency about how technology is used. VNews is an AI-powered news briefing and exploration platform. We do not present algorithmic summaries as traditional manual reporting, nor do we conceal the central role of artificial intelligence in our pipeline.
This document discloses how artificial intelligence functions across VNews, the safeguards in place to ensure factual fidelity, and how readers can identify and report errors.
2. How AI is Used at VNews
Artificial intelligence (specifically Google Gemini models hosted on Google Cloud) is employed in the following specific stages:
1. Multi-Source Story Clustering: Automated clustering algorithms compare incoming news reports from diverse publishers to identify developing events and corroborate shared facts.
2. AI News Brief Generation: The AI model synthesizes a structured briefing consisting of:
- A factual, objective headline
- Key summary bullet points
- "Why It Matters" context
- Core factual details (people, entities, dates, locations)
- Suggested follow-up exploratory questions
3. Interactive Exploration ("Dig Deeper"): Readers can ask specific follow-up questions about a story. The AI generates contextual explanations strictly bounded by the underlying source articles.
3. Source Grounding & Anti-Hallucination Safeguards
To prevent hallucinations, fabricated information, or misattribution, VNews enforces strict engineering boundaries:
- Zero Fabricated Sources: AI models are never permitted to generate or fabricate source URLs. Source URLs, publisher names, and canonical links are resolved and stored authoritatively on our backend servers from original HTTP ingest data.
- Multi-Source Corroboration: Whenever available, briefings draw from multiple independent reporting outlets to present balanced viewpoints and verify factual consensus.
- No Search Grounding in Brief Generation: Ingestion transformations operate strictly on the extracted text of the ingested articles, preventing unpredictable web search contamination during generation.
- Fail-Closed Forward Projections: Speculative or predictive fields (such as "What to Watch") fail closed to `null` unless explicitly supported by direct factual statements in the source reporting.
4. What AI Does NOT Do at VNews
- No Primary Reporting: VNews AI does not conduct field interviews, original investigative journalism, or phone calls. All knowledge derives from the credited source reporting.
- No Fictitious Author Bylines: We never invent fictional reporter personas or artificial editorial identities. Articles are clearly designated as AI News Briefs with clear source attribution.
- No Opinion Manipulation: Briefing prompts are strictly tuned for neutrality, conciseness, and balanced presentation of facts.
5. High-Stakes Disclosures
News involving sensitive or critical domains requires elevated caution:
- Health & Medical News: Briefings are for general awareness only and must never be treated as clinical or medical advice.
- Financial & Legal News: Briefings do not constitute investment, financial, tax, or legal counsel.
- Elections & Public Safety: Readers are provided with prominent disclaimers advising them to cross-reference primary government election bodies and emergency services.
6. Error Correction & Reader Reporting
While our pipeline is calibrated for high accuracy, artificial intelligence can occasionally misinterpret complex phrasing or omit critical nuance.
We provide transparent reporting tools:
- Every article includes a "Report an inaccuracy" button.
- Readers can flag factual errors, misleading summaries, or misattribution.
- Reports are routed directly to our editorial review queue. Verified inaccuracies result in updated briefings with published correction timestamps and explanatory notes.
